“From stethoscope to microscope”
Career in research with an MBBS

2 – 6pm, Tuesday, 26 April 2011

Chandramukhi-Kadambini Hall, Central Library, University of Calcutta, Kolkata

The India Alliance and Centre for Modern Biology, University of Calcutta are proud to organize a session for medical graduates.

Although basic molecular biology on M Tuberculosis and treating Tuberculosis in human patients are treated as different careers, they actually represent the spectra of our endeavour to advance knowledge for human welfare. Unfortunately in India clinicians and scientists often diverge in their training right after 12th Standard, giving us little opportunity to explore this spectra regardless of the training. It is in this context that a session is being organized to inform MBBS doctors with budding research ambitions.

This seminar will feature:

1) Talks by 3 eminent and outstanding clinical researchers

  • Dr B N Chakraborthy, Institute of Reproductive Biology, Kolkata
  • Dr Mammen Chandy, Tata Memorial Hospital, Kolkata
  • Dr Chittranjan Yajnik, KEM Hospital, Pune

All three speakers have had basic training as clinicians but chose to bring a molecular genetic perspective to their work. At this seminar, they will talk about the choices they made to pursue a career in scientific research along with their passion for clinical work. It will be an opportunity to hear about making career choices that are unconstrained by commonly held perceptions.

2) Panel Discussion with eminent Clinicians with a strong passion for Research

At the discussion, students would be provided a platform to ask panelists about building a successful career in research. In addition to the speakers above, the panelists will also include Members of the India Alliance Selection Committee who can provide a perspective on international opportunities for clinical researchers. Funding opportunities for clinicians from the India Alliance would also be discussed.

3) Talks by MBBS-PhD students

The University of Calcutta has a unique program for MBBS graduates who wish to pursue a career in research. We will hear from 5 PhD students from this program.

The agenda for the seminar will be finalized shortly.
