Dr. Dutt is a Principal Investigator (Scientist F) at ACTREC, Tata Memorial Centre since Oct 2010. Dr. Dutt is a recipient of two Ph.D degrees. After completing his doctoral studies in Plant Genetics from ICGEB/ JMI, Delhi (mentor/s: Dr. Vanga Siva Reddy/ Dr. Arif Ali), he pursued second Ph.D in Developmental Biology from the Univ. of Zurich, Switzerland (mentor: Dr. Alex Hajnal); is a recipient of the Swiss National Science Foundation post-doctoral fellowship award (2005); the Ramalingaswami Fellowship Award (2010) and the Wellcome Trust/ DBT India Alliance Intermediate Fellowship (2012). He was recently nominated as Faculty Member in Medical Genetics- F1000 Prime (2015); serves on the Editorial Board of PLOS ONE; BMC Genomics; and, on the advisory Board of several start up companies in India. The focus of his laboratory at ACTREC is to use genomic approaches to uncover the causes of human disease particularly head and neck, lung, and gallbladder cancer using advanced sequencing and functional genomics approaches; to develop novel computational approaches to analyze high throughput cancer genome dataset; and, study the pathogens associated with human cancer. Dr. Dutt's laboratory in collaboration with Dr. Kumar Prabhash has pioneered EGFR and KRAS mutation profiling in lung cancer patients of Indian origin; developed computational tools like “HPVDetector”, “TMC-SNPdb" and experimental tools like "CRE" with application in clinical diagnostics at the TMH.

Before joining ACTREC, Dr. Dutt completed his postdoctoral studies in the laboratory of Dr. Matthew Meyerson at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. His work was primarily focused on systematic discovery of cancer genome somatic alterations followed by in vitro functional validation of the oncogenic mutation. His efforts led to the seminal discovery of somatic FGFR2 mutation in endometrial cancer; amplification of FGFR1 in lung squamous cell carcinoma; and, amplification of PDGFRA in lung cancer. Dr. Dutt has published in several reputed scientific journals including Nature, Nature Genetics, Cancer Discovery, PNAS, Cancer Research, Chem Biol, etc…..
