During my postgraduate training in Oral Medicine I was involved in a project that used mobile phone to assist in oral cancer screening. The study showed that using the highly prevalent mobile phone network, it is possible to provide remote access to oral cancer specialists’ and thereby enabling effective early detection.  With this exposure, I decided to pursue a career that combines clinical experience with research expertise. Consequently, I joined the head and neck oncology group, Mazumdar Shaw Medical Center and also worked at Mazumdar-Shaw Center for translational research (MSCTR, MSMF) as Research Fellow. The current proposal is a fall out of the mobile phone project wherein only 50% of the subjects complied with the advice for a biopsy; the need for a non-invasive diagnostic screening tool. In this project, we propose to develop an oral cytology based screening tool for early oral cancer detection.

During my tenure at MSCC and MSCTR, I will be working with Dr. Amritha Suresh, PhD (Supervisor), a molecular biologist and Dr. Moni Abraham Kuriakose MD, (Co-supervisor/Sponsor), a clinician-scientist. Both of them together lead the Head and Neck Research Program of MSCTR-MSMF, Bangalore and have been focusing on early detection/chemoprevention for the past 10 years. I believe that undertaking this fellowship at this early stage of my career will provide me with a better understanding of the existing clinical problems, molecular basis of oral cancer and help me to develop a scientific temperament thereby enabling effective application of these newly acquired skills in patient care.
