Roles on Application:

Lead applicant is the individual applying for a Fellowship. They will also be the primary user of IASys (India Alliance System for Applications). This individual is responsible for filling in an application, editing and completing it. Also, they must select and coordinate among sponsors/external supervisors/collaborators, to ensure that a complete form is submitted within the deadline.

Sponsor

Established senior researcher at the host institution; normally the head of department or director of the sponsoring host institution. They should:

  • be in a position to guarantee space and resources at the institution/ department for the duration of the grant;
  • hold a contract of employment that extends beyond the grant;
  • Sign up to the Grant Conditions & Policies.

They would have to provide a letter of support that indicates that if an award is made:

  • you will be granted the status and prerogatives of other academic staff of similar seniority.
  • you will not have to spend more than eight hours per week on activities unrelated to the fellowship (e.g. teaching duties).
  • what resources the host institution intends to provide to meet your research goals and how they will support your career development.

The requirements from the Sponsor vary amongst the schemes. Please refer to scheme pages for additional information.

External Sponsor(s)

The individual in whose laboratory the applicant wishes to utilize his “Work outside the host institution” provision. They should be able to guarantee that the applicant will have access to the facilities required and provide the required scientific support.

(Early Career Only) Fellowship supervisor

In whose laboratory and under whose supervision, the applicant intends to carry out the Fellowship project. This individual must have a contract of employment at the sponsoring host institution in India and have tenure beyond the duration of the proposed Fellowship. They should guarantee the applicant access to laboratory space and resources required for the project as well as provide relevant scientific guidance for the tenure of the Fellowship.

(Senior and Intermediate only) Current Supervisor

Established researchers who have mentored the candidate for a significant period of time recently or under whom the applicant is currently employed. They should be able to provide signed letters commenting on the candidate's intellectual independence. They may be the candidate's Postdoctoral supervisor or the head of the department in case the candidate already has a faculty position.

Note: If the candidate has recently moved to the host institution (within last one year), an additional letter of recommendation would be encouraged. This could be from an established researcher who has mentored the candidate for a significant period of time in his/her previous position. Please also note that there is no restriction on the number of letters of recommendation that can be provided on an application.

(Early Career Only) Mentor

This would typically be an established researcher who has known the candidate for a significant period of time and can provide a detailed letter of recommendation commenting on the candidate’s abilities. They may be the candidate’s thesis guide or Postdoctoral supervisor. In some cases, the External Sponsor and Mentor may be the same individual. This role has been specifically created for the applicant to provide a letter of recommendation in addition to the letter provided by the Fellowship Supervisor; therefore, the Mentor cannot be the Fellowship supervisor.

Collaborator(s)

Scientific/medical/academic colleagues associated with a research proposal and named in the body of the application. Typically these are individuals who will supply reagents, assist in specific protocols, provide resource services etc.

Depending on the scheme, and the situation of the lead applicant, multiple roles on an application may be fulfilled by the same individual. Please ensure that you read the relevant scheme pages to familiarize yourself with the roles that these individuals will play on the Fellowship application.
